The measurement

What is a product carbon footprint?

A product carbon footprint, or PCF, quantifies the greenhouse gas emissions and removals associated with a product and expresses the result as carbon dioxide equivalent, or CO₂e, per defined unit of product.

ISO 14067 provides principles, requirements and guidance for quantifying and reporting a product carbon footprint. It applies a life-cycle approach consistent with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 but focuses on one environmental impact category: climate change.

A PCF is different from an organisational GHG inventory. Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 reporting measures emissions associated with the reporting organisation. A PCF instead determines the emissions attributable to a defined product system, such as one tonne of material, one packaged item or another functional or declared unit.

Full and partial product carbon footprints

A full PCF may consider the product from raw material extraction through manufacturing, distribution, use and end-of-life treatment, commonly described as cradle-to-grave. A partial PCF covers a defined portion of the life cycle; a cradle-to-gate study, for example, normally stops when the product leaves the manufacturing facility.

What triggers the work

When might your organisation need a PCF?

There is no universal requirement for every product to have a carbon footprint. The trigger usually comes from a customer, market or internal decision.

Customer and supply-chain requests

Customers may require product-level carbon information to evaluate suppliers, calculate purchased-goods emissions or meet their own climate targets. Before calculating, the required unit, boundary, reporting period, methodology and verification level should be confirmed.

Procurement and tender requirements

Product carbon information may form part of tender evaluation, low-carbon procurement or project specifications. A corporate carbon inventory will not normally satisfy a request for emissions per product unit.

Export and product regulation

Product environmental requirements are developing across several markets, including through product-specific measures under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. These measures do not create one common PCF deadline for every product. Exporters must determine what applies to their product category and destination market.

Product and process improvement

Management may commission a PCF to identify carbon hotspots, test lower-carbon materials, evaluate process changes or establish a baseline for a product-level reduction programme.

Customers need product-level data

An organisational footprint cannot show the emissions attributable to one unit of product. A PCF establishes the product boundary, allocation method and production data needed to answer that question.

Carbon claims need supporting evidence

Statements about a product's carbon performance should reflect the defined boundary, data period and calculation method. A documented model and technical report provide the basis for customer communication or independent verification.

Reduction claims need a comparable baseline

Later assessments need a consistent unit, boundary, allocation method and data basis. Method changes should be separated from genuine product improvements so reported reductions are not calculation artefacts.
